It's like asking how long it takes to become a millionaire in real life (or to stick with your example, to save $100,000).
There's no one answer - too many variables.
In my case, within a week of starting the game I got a drop that sold (on this site, before the auction site ... using the buy/sell forum) for 350k.
During the months after that I have acquired millions (and spent most of it on stuff like FOW armor and buying weapons and shields I did not need). Most of it was dumb luck (as well as being dumb enough to spend hours at a time farming).

<10min with a certain online auction site
But seriously, making quick cash in GW requires good luck or catching a new weapons debue (eg. IDS, Green weapons in tome)

Buying and selling is definitly the quickest way to get money, you can get 100K in a day, though, only if you know very well what you're doing. Do you? I won't count on it, since most people don't know what they're doing.
Otherwise, farming several locations each day can get you money pretty quick, and you can for 30-50K each day.

It takes longer now then it used to take.
The prices of (old) greens and ecto's have dropped.
The new greens to pay a lot except Bulwark.
Running doesn't pay a lot.
Really, it's a lot more effort these days then it used to be.

You're right. Remember the old ole days before chests required keys? You could duck out of the Grotto, hit the chest that was 1 minute away, get three drops each time - sometimes rares, usually not. It was easy to pick up 15 or 20k before dying of boredom. And the process was so easy that you could practically read a book while doing it.

just plain boring monster killing (Minoturs, Trolls, Grawl, etc) reaps about 1k every 5 minutes on coin drops and crap items that go to the merchant.
Wurm farming for shells yields about 5k in about about 30 minutes.

On the 2nd day of the new UW, I made 400k of buying and selling. I was the man back then. Now I only got 200k left, cause I spent it all. :P

I've made a lot of gold in Tombs with my Ranger. I've been very lucky and picked up a few ectos as well as quite a few greens. I haven't gotten the biggie yet, Victo's shield, but I've gotten enough of the others to make a couple 100k in a couple days. It's been enough to upgrade to Grotto armor and I still have a lot left over (I didn't go with 100% Grotto because I prefer the look of a mix of Droks and Grotto armor). With my Warrior, I solo in the desert Griff and Mino farming. I've made a lot there, but you have to temper yourself because you can overfarm and come away with some pretty worthless trips.

actually this is kinda a stupid question, in guild wars when your lucky you can have 500k in 1 hour (the chance is maybe 1 on a million )
same question:
how much money you make on gambling?
most of the time -5 euros or something, but maybe +120.000.000 euros lol

It also depends on your character. As many of us have come to realize (not proven) and as has been discussed in other threads, a character with a bad gen (some number they insert into your character upon generation) can give you uniformly bad drops whereas some characters can get uniformly good drops. Most people we have noticed are in between though. That's why you get some people claiming that they haven't gotten so-and-so drops after 100+ runs at something and others saying they've got them on about every other run.
Try it out yourself. Once you find out which characters you have that are lucky, you can do more stuff with them for better loot.
Unfortunately, my favorite character is a bad gen :-(. My second character is a great gen, but he's not as fun to play. Most people have been telling me to delete him and create another in his place (hoping for a good gen), but being an old school roleplayer I can't bring myself to get rid of him.. So with him, I won't make 100k doing anything but running for the most part. With my monk, I can make 100k doing about anything (including ettin farming) in a short matter of time. A guildie has a lucky warrior and he can make 100k in a week or less (almost has his 2nd set of fissure)...
That's something to take intoaccount when comparing people's riches. Hopefully someday ANet will make the drops more random (looking at the update logs shows they've tweaked them a few times. As long as its a closed system (hush-hush), there's no real way to point it out to them.

Huh...I wonder if there's any validity to this. First time hearing it, but could explain why my guildie has the worst luck in drops...

same here. its all random. during one period i managed 2 sup vigors and a few monk sups all pretty much together. But i've also had dry spells. Never had over 130k in my storage at one time though. But i have purchased 5 sets of 15k armor and numerous weapons and such. It's hard for me to save.
But i can gain a 100k in a few days. that's playing an hour or two a day.

Over 1 million in 3 days from the 55 monk when it wasn't nerfed... Now I can make about... 300-400k in a day if I run non-stop. Usually just play around, about 100k per day.
Going to try making 400k per day during summer... say... ever other day, and sell most on ebay.

Yeah. That's the only problem. I wouldn't blame you if you took it with a grain of salt. Since they are tight-lipped about the drop process (as most games are), there's no easy way to really verify it with any sort of proof. Maybe someone can put together some research kinda like they did for the absorptions/damages/etc for something like this, keeping in mind the possibility of numbers generated for a new character that affects drops. It would still be difficult.
You do, of course, have to disregard the auto-nerfs that happen which can affect it every now and then. Ultimately, it would take quite a bit of time to rule out a string of bad luck. For Zell, if a string of bad luck lasts 800+ hours, then I have nothing for that :-) However, it did not surprise me when one of my running mates got 2 purple Max weapons in a single run through Gates of Kryta (she also gets quite a few IDS' and other items).
One thing I will point out though is that Grenth's Footprint/Sorrow's Furnace used to be on a different system. From the time it was released through whenver the update was (I'd have to check the log archives again), it was literally the only place in the game that some of us could consistently get greens (including Zell). However, after the update, it seemed to be sync'ed back up with the rest of the world. That's why I don't say someone is BS'ing when they either say they got mucho golds somewhere or no golds ever from somewhere. They could both be right.
We have noticed, though, that it's not the entire account (which is why we believe its some number generated in a new character that determines drops). Zell has never gotten a black dye drop (800+ hours), whereas two of my other characters have gotten them in the first 20-40 hours (one in pre even). Again, that's not enough info to prove anything, but is disconcerting.. I would be interested in hearing more about your other guildie (or getting him/you in a group and trying some areas to see if we can notice a difference).
To bring it back to the thread's subject. You have to take this into account (or should rather) when discussing how fast you can earn cash. It's different for a really 'lucky' character than for a really 'unlucky' character.

I hate trading and I don't sell items to other players, ever. I think running is lame, so I don't run people for money either.
I am getting my money by just killing mobs and selling their stuff to NPC merchants. If I do what I consider "heavy farming", I need like 4-5 days to get 100k. I never farm for more than 2-3 hours in a row, though. Since I got my FoW armor I pretty much stopped that kind of farming, though. Now I am clearing an area whenever I feel like it which means I am getting like 5k per day on average.

Hm... it really depends what has been thrown your way. I mean for the longest time i played and didnt get any lucky breaks. I bought and sold like a master but never got over 15k. It was the worse... but i say the last month my bank account has sky rocketed. I have had 100k 2 times now, both times i spent it all. Soon i will have absolutly no money problems. Im getting an invisi monk, only like 3 more things to do till i can. Then i will be fine. For me getting the 100k 2 times and 50k one time was reletivly easy. The first time my firend let me borrow 40k, the kid is a real life friend and lucky beyond beleif... So he let me borrow it and i used that to get 100k. Then i got 100k a 2nd time by farming. Once you beat the game you bank account starts to go up up up if you have a W. Recently i made 50k or 60k i forget. It was rather easy. 1st i bought a victos blade at 31k and sold at 35k. That made some money but not much... it really wasnt worth it. Then i got really really lucky in war camp... i found a guy and he sold me his victos BATTLE AXE for 20k yes i do not lie 20k. I went and sold that item for 50k. It was soo worth it. So depending on luck you can get 100k in 1 day or 1 month. Once you beat the game with and monk and you have favor your pretty much set for life.

I used to have 100K+ in my account but i spent most of it on weapons, and armors. I made that kind of money by farming and trading. I remember when i got Malinon Shield and sold it for 65k. Than sold bunch of other items to get my account into the 100k mark. It easy to make golds but even easier to spend it all.
